The General Medical Council (GMC) is supposed to protect patients in Britain and elsewhere from bad doctors. The GMC lays down the rules and charges doctors hefty fees for their licences to practice.

A few decades ago the GMC was often in the papers (especially the Sunday tabloids) for investigating doctors who’d had sex with their patients.

And doctors who drove motor cars while drunk would get struck off too.

The rules were simple and effective.

But today the GMC has given itself far reaching powers. And I believe it is these powers which have helped…
